Corporation for National and Community Service

Resources for Organizations >
2011 Grant Funds

Through a network of six organizations, the Corporation for National and Community Service each year makes available approximately $600,000 to nonprofit groups to organize and implement King Day service projects. Listed below are the names of the organizations and brief descriptions of the scope of their grant.

  • The Points of Light Institute will receive $150,000 to mobilize 100,000 volunteers (including 5,000 Volunteer Leaders) for the King Day of Service in 2011. They will be integrated into the Get HandsOn Campaign to activate 1 million citizen leaders who will enlist their families, neighbors, co-workers, and friends to take action in projects that will help solve communities' environmental, education, and economic challenges. One of the central platforms for the Campaign is leveraging points in time. The campaign will be a year-round call to action, anchored by national days of action and focused on sustainable improvement in each of the impact areas.

  • The North Carolina Campus Compact will receive $100,000 to engage students in project planning, connect them with local communities, and expand the MLK Day of Service by enhancing the students’ sense of responsibility, citizenship, leadership, and awareness, while reinvigorating higher education’s concern for improving the quality of life.

    • Applications for In-Network – Released July 7, 2010/Due August 6, 2010 and Out-of-Network – To be released August 11, 2010/Due September 10, 2010; the RFP may be found here. Please direct all inquiries to Leslie A. Garvin, MSW at lgarvin@elon.edu.

  • Youth Service America will receive $100,000 to engage up to 15 lead agencies in YSA’s Semester of Service, which is designed to engage 25,000 students between the ages of 5 and 25 to serve at least 70 hours during the school semester. These lead agencies will also be invited to participate in YSA’s Global Youth Service Day training institute to prepare for Semester of Service activities.

    • Accepting applications for our MLK-Semester of Service program from August 1 – September 1. For more information, please contact Michael Minks at MMinks@ysa.org.

  • Service for Peace will receive $97,500 to mobilize volunteers from new populations and organizations that have not previously served on the King Holiday. To accomplish this, they have established a “40 Days of Peace” program that will leverage the involvement of new partners.
  • Campus Kitchen will receive $77,500 to bring college students and the community together to address issues surrounding hunger by engaging youth in leading hunger relief programs to share on-campus kitchen space, recover unused food from campus cafeterias, and deliver meals to low-income neighborhoods.

    • Applications will be posted and open on Monday, July 26th . The deadline for applications September 1st . Please direct your inquiries to Maureen Roche at mroche@campuskitchens.org.

  • The National Alliance of Faith and Justice will receive $75,000 to fund sub-grantees that will extend recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee as a core theme. NAFJ will support a pre-determined range of volunteer activities which will begin on, near, or bring emphasis to the 2011 MLK Day of Service. Subgrant priorities have been derived from focus areas of the Serve America Act (SAA), among priorities of the Federal Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council (FJJCC), or align with recommendations made in March 2010 by the White House (WH) Advisory Council on Faith and Neighborhood Partnerships.

    • Webmasters will post August 1. Applications accepted August 1 - September 15. Please direct your inquiries to Addie Richburg at office@nafj.org or volunteer@nafj.org.
